SCHWARZ | Nr. 1, 2019 (800 x 280 cm)

With a background in pedagogy, Kathrin Maliszewski is an artist experimenting with the social, historical and scientific effect of colours. Working in the field of printmaking, and primarily with lithography, she has produced a site-specific installation which has grown from her long-term research into the colour black. After developing INK 11.1, her own mix of black, she conceived a monumental, monochromatic lithography on one of the existing walls of the exhibition space. In an attempt to represent non-existent matter, which can only occur in the total absence of light, she reflects on the impossibility of reproducing an absolute black. In line with the efforts of early abstract painters, who wanted to completely abandon the depiction of reality, Maliszewski’s installation also carries strong philosophical implications, and could also translate a sense of distrust and uncertainty toward contemporary values.
